Practical Information

The Brazilian Embassies and Consulates abroad maintain updated web sites, that provide information about visas and entry requirements, such as immunizations, depending on where you are coming from, as well as other practical information and health tips. Please take some time to review the entry requirements to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Visa Information

Brazil has agreement for visa exception with several countries. Please consult the visa requirements by country.

Citizens from all other countries do need a tourist visa to enter in Brazil. This includes, among others: USA, China, Japan, Russia, Canada and several more. The tourist visa provides coverage for attending scientific conferences, seminars, or meetings. Note that tourist visa holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil, but they can get per-diem allowances. In order to request a tourist visa, it is necessary to contact the nearest Brazilian Consulate.

AMERICAN CITIZENS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT IT MIGHT TAKE MORE THAN ONE MONTH TO GET THE VISA IN THEIR CASE. For other citizens, it should usually take a couple of weeks or less. Please check this with the nearest Consulate as soon as possible.

The LATIN organizers will provide a letter of invitation for those participants who request so and provide the following information by email to meta@wb.com.br.

  • full name.
  • passport number and country of expedition.
  • email address to send the letter
  • names and passport numbers of accompanying persons, if any.

Language

The national language is Portuguese. However, the Portuguese spoken in Brazil is quite different, both in accent and intonation, of that spoken in Portugal and other former Portuguese colonies. English and Spanish is spoken in some hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Voltage

At Buzios and Rio de Janeiro the electrical power is 110 V, 60 Hz.

Currency

The local currency is the Brazilian "Real", usually denoted as R$ or BRL. It circulates in banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Reais, and coins of 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 Real. There are two versions of coins (old and new style) and two versions of the R$ 10,00 banknote, both in circulation. Major credit cards (Visa, Master, Amex, Diners) are widely accepted at most hotels, restaurants and stores.

Tipping

A 10% tip is usually already included in the bill at restaurants and bars. You are not obligated to pay this tip, but usually nobody complains. Of course you may leave a higher tip if you wish. If the tip is not included, it will be explicitly indicated in the bill. Usually, taxes are already included in all prices. An exception are the hotel prices, which may add a 5% to 10% tax to the given rates. We have already added the 5% tax that the hotel Atlantico charges to the rates we have put in the web site.

Security
